Leading 2-0 after six innings, the Centre College baseball team was unable to hold the lead as the Colonels fell 3-2 to Transylvania University Wednesday, April 10 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
Centre jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) hit a two-out single to score freshman Matt Broering (Alexandria, Ky.) in the third inning.
Junior Nick Forte (Gilbertstville, Ky.) made it 2-0 in the fourth with an RBI ground out that scored freshman Jake Johnson (Louisville, Ky.).
The lead remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh. Transylvania (13-11) scored an unearned run in the seventh, another run in the eighth and then went ahead in the ninth with the help of three Centre errors in the final inning.
Freshman starting pitcher Stephen Shunk (Lexington, Ky.) posted his best outing of the season. Shunk tossed six scoreless innings and allowed five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three, but got a no-decision.
Sophomore Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.) was the tough-luck loser. Litsey allowed two runs - one earned - over two innings of work. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out one.
The Colonels managed only four hits in the game by four different players.
