Baseball falls 7-4 to Transylvania
Ahead 4-2 entering the eighth inning the Centre College baseball team allowed five runs and could not recover in falling 7-4 to Transylvania University Tuesday, Feb. 26 in Danville, Ky.
The two teams scored a run each in the fourth with junior first baseman Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.) driving in sophomore outfielder Forrest Goodwin (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) on a single to right field for the Colonels first run of the game.
Centre took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Litsey scored sophomore second baseman Sam Spees (Dayton, Ohio) on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Pioneers (2-2) tied the game at two with an unearned run in the sixth, but Centre answered with a pair of runs in the seventh. With runners on first and third, Goodwin singled to right to score Spees. Freshman designated hitter Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) then drove in sophomore outfielder Jake Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) with a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and the Colonels led 4-2.
After a line out to start the eighth, Transylvania used four hits, two walks and an error to score five runs and go back in front.
The Colonels were unable to put anything together in their final two at-bats as the Pioneers closed out the win.
Freshman pitcher Brett Vitkun (Williamsport, Md.) took the loss and falls to 0-1. Vitkun allowed five runs - three earned - in 0.2 of an inning. He gave up four hits and walked two.
Johnson and Spees both finished with three hits each, while Goodwin had two hits in five at-bats.
Centre, now 2-4, will next host Calvin College Friday, Feb. 28. The nine-inning game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
