Colonels handle Mountaineers in Thursday victory, 5-1

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball defeated in-state foe Berea, 5-1, Thursday evening at Gary Wright Field.

The Colonels move to 9-6 overall with their second win against the Mountaineers (2-17) this season. They won a 9-1 decision at Berea back on Feb. 27.

Centre scored first in the bottom of the opening inning, as Seth Hagan (Goshen, Ky.) drove in Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) on a two-out RBI.

Berea's lone run came across in the top of the third as an unearned score, but Centre promptly responded in the fourth to take the lead for good. Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) doubled to left center, bringing in Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.) to make it 2-1.

The top of Centre's order produced another run in the fifth, with Falbo's single up the middle bringing in Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.).

In the seventh, Hagan smacked a single to left to drive in Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) for his second RBI of the night.

Esselman capped things with a solo homerun in the eighth – the first of his collegiate career – making it 5-1.

A slew of pitchers saw action against the Mountaineers, but it was Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) who earned the win.

Hogan Brownley (Louisville, Ky.) fanned a pair of hitters in the seventh, as did Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) in the eighth while stranding two in scoring position.

Centre's eight pitchers combined to allow nine hits, no walks and just one (unearned) run.

The Colonels head south for their Spring Break trip in Winter Haven, Fla., next week, playing five games as part of the RussMatt Invitational. Centre begins Sunday with a doubleheader against Westminster.
