Lynx take Saturday DH, series from Colonels

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Centre baseball suffered a pair of defeats at Rhodes Saturday, falling by scores of 4-1 and 5-4 to drop the Southern Athletic Association series.

The Colonels slide to 12-11 (4-5 SAA) for the season, as the SAA-leading Lynx move to 17-10 (9-3).

GAME ONE: Rhodes 4, Centre 1

The Lynx broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third, as consecutive RBI singles and a sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

Rhodes added another in the eighth on Nick Bosma's solo homerun, but starter Trey Sledge needed little help from his offense.

Sledge threw seven innings, striking out eight and surrendering just three hits in a stellar effort for Rhodes.

The Colonels would score one in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.), but could manage no more offense.

GAME TWO: Rhodes 5, Centre 4

Centre seemed poised to claim the nightcap, jumping out to an early lead after Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) drove in two with a RBI single in the second inning.

Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) pitched 5.2 innings while scattering five hits and striking out three, but got into trouble with two outs in the sixth.

The Lynx loaded the bases, chasing Shelley in exchange for closer Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.). That's when Zac Lange smacked a grand slam, putting Rhodes ahead at 5-2.

Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to help trim the lead, marking his second dinger of the season.

Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.) helped Centre's cause with a RBI single in the seventh, but Bosma closed the door and earned a save to secure the series sweep.

Centre returns to action Wednesday, facing Transylvania at 7 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, Ky.
