Centre’s offense sputters in 61-41 loss to Carthage

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Centre men's basketball fell 61-41 to Carthage Friday evening in the opener of the Webster University Tournament.

A day removed from Thanksgiving, the Colonels (1-2) struggled to find their offensive touch against the Red Men (2-1), shooting just above 30 percent from the field and 2 of 17 (11.8%) from 3-point range.

After reaching 80-plus points in each of its first two games, Centre failed to hit the 50-point mark for the first time since a 46-43 victory over Spalding back on Dec. 15, 2015.

The team from Kenosha, Wis., led from wire to wire Friday evening, taking an early lead despite having their own shooting woes.

Centre and Carthage went a combined 6 for 28 to start the game and 0 for 12 from long range, but a rebounding edge helped the Red Men take control.

After 20 minutes, the Red Men led 25-19, but were out-rebounding the Colonels 22-15, including 12 offensive rebounds that led to nine second chance points. Centre limited Carthage to 10 of 35 (28.6%) shooting in the first half.

Eventually, the Red Men warmed up on their offensive end, and went on to out-score the Colonels 36-22 in the second half.

Carthage's biggest lead came around the seven-minute mark, when a 3-pointer from Jordan Thomas made it 57-36.

Sophomore Art Walker (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) was the lone Colonel in double figures, finishing with 11 points while hitting all seven of his free throws.

Sophomore Perry Ayers (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Bailey Rakes (Mt. Washington, Ky.) each hauled in six rebounds to lead Centre.

The Colonels will face whichever team falls in Friday's nightcap between Coe College and host Webster tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m. ET.
