Colonels match 3-point record in blowout win over Hendrix

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's basketball tied the program record with 19 3-pointers Friday evening, routing the visiting Hendrix Warriors, 108-48, in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action inside Alumni Gymnasium.

The Colonels' 19 triples matches the team's single-game record originally set back in 2000 against Lynchburg, and reached again in 2016 against Millsaps. Centre's 33 attempts Friday were fewer than either of those previous efforts, however.

Their 108 points are the most since scoring 112 once during the 1992 season – which featured current Head Coach Greg Mason as a student-athlete. With last Sunday's 101-96 win at Rhodes, they also scored 100-plus in consecutive games for the first time ever.

Centre moves to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in-conference, winning six of its last seven while remaining a perfect 5-0 at home. Hendrix, which lost to Centre 98-73 in Conway, Ark., last Friday falls to 4-15 (2-6 SAA).

Although the Warriors scored the game's first five points, the Colonels wasted little time establishing their dominance from long range.

Centre answered Hendrix's opening volley with a 24-9 run to open up a double figure lead midway through the first half.

From there, the Colonels went on a remarkable stretch where they hit six consecutive 3-pointers, effectively putting the game out of reach before the halftime break.

They led 55-23 at the half, led by sophomore Art Walker's (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) 17 points.

Centre kept its hot shooting going in the second half, where it outscored Hendrix by a similar 53-25 margin.

Walker led the team with 20 points in just 20 minutes of playing time, and was followed by sophomore Jacob Bates' (LaGrange, Ky.) 16-point, nine-rebound effort.

Junior Jarod Griffin (Lexington, Ky.) tallied 13 points, and freshman Dawson Crump (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored 10.

In a testament to their well-balanced attack, nine different Colonels hit a 3-pointer – led by Walker's four – and a dozen Colonels contributed at least one of the team's season-high 26 assists. Sophomore Perry Ayers (Bowling Green, Ky.) and freshman Chris West (Olney, Md.) had a four each.

Centre had 58 rebounds to Hendrix's 31, the most in at least eight years and the first 50-board effort since 2011. Nineteen of the Colonels' rebounds were offensive, leading to 26 second chance points.

Defensively, the Colonels forced 17 Warriors turnovers, resulting in 28 points, and recorded a season-high 11 steals.

The Colonels face the Rhodes Lynx Sunday at 3 p.m. ET in Alumni Gym. Centre defeated Rhodes in a 101-96 thriller last weekend in Memphis, Tenn.
