Mattingly paces Centre men on day 1 at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – It was a late finish for the Centre men's golf team on day one of the Jekyll Island Men's Collegiate at Pine Lakes G.C. The Colonels were in the last group to tee off on Friday and are in 23rd place through the first 18 holes.

Centre shot a combined team score of 311 on Friday to finish one shots ahead of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and two shots ahead of Christopher Newport. The Colonels currently sit two shots back of Millsaps on the leaderboard.

Individually, junior Jake Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) had one of the nicest rounds of his collegiate career on Friday, posting a score of 69 - good for a career low. Mattingly came through with birdies on three of his final four holes to finish the back nine at two under par and he currently sits in a tie for sixth place overall.

Junior Zach Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) bounded back after a rough opening hole to go one over par on the back nine and finish with a score of 77.

Junior Hans Stromberg (Lexington, Ky.) improved by three shots from the front nine to the back nine, recording birdies on the 11th and 15th holes on his back nine to finish with a score of 81.

Seniors Hall Rupert (Powells Point, N.C.) and Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.) rounded things off for the Colonels on Friday with respective scores of 82 and 90.

The second of three rounds at the Jekyll Island Men's Collegiate will take place on Saturday.
