Centre men shoot 295 on final day at Jekyll Island
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The final round of the Jekyll Island Men's Collegiate wrapped up earlier today and the Centre men's golf team had by far its best round of the three-day event, posting a combined team score of 295 and moving up six spots on the leaderboard from Saturday to tie for 20th place.
The Colonels had a three-day total of 909 as they ended up tied with Sewanee. Centre jumped several teams on the leaderboard on the final day of play, including Ferrum, Millsaps and Transylvania.
Individually, Centre had a pair of high scorers for the Sunday round as senior Hall Rupert (Powells Point, N.C.) and junior Zach Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) each fired rounds of 73. Mattingly had a strong start to his Sunday, shooting one under par on the front nine. Rupert shot even par on the back nine for the Colonels and also had an eagle on the par 5 sixth hole for his final round.
Junior Jake Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) finished with a round of 74 on Sunday as he recorded more birdies on his final round than any Centre player did in any of their previous rounds in the tournament. Both Mattingly brothers landed in the overall individual top 50 for the tournament.
Junior Hans Stromberg (Lexington, Ky.) posted a score of 75, minimizing his mistakes during the round and recording birdies in two out of three holes near the turn. Senior Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.) rounded things off for Centre with a score of 85 on Sunday.
The Colonels will be spending their Spring Break in Tampa, Fla., where they will be hosting this year's Centre Invite on Mar. 23-24.
