Men's lacrosse finishes regular season with 24-2 win at Oglethorpe
The Centre men's lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season by rolling to a 24-2 victory over Oglethorpe in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game Sunday in Atlanta.
The 24 goals set a new school record for the Colonels, surpassing the previous mark of 22, which they achieved three times this season. In all, 15 players scored for Centre, led by Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.), Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.), Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) and Morgan Mayes (Louisville, Ky.) with three each. Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with five assists.
After finishing 3-10 in its first season in 2011, the Centre lacrosse program finishes the regular season at 12-3 with a 7-2 mark in SCAC play. Ogletyhorpe falls to 1-13 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
The Colonels left little doubt about the outcome of the game, scoring the first 20 goals before Oglethorpe got on the board twice in the fourth quarter. Centre led 7-0 after the first quarter, 15-0 at halftime and 19-0 at the end of the third.
Chuck Treis (Cedar Grove, N.C.), Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) and Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) shared time in goal for Centre, making six, five and three saves respectively. Also scoring for the Colonels were Harry Meisner (Wyoming, Ohio) with two goals and Robert Anthony (Louisville, Ky.), Patrick Evans (Louisville, Ky.), Eamon Delay (Hempstead, N.Y.), Eric Gilligan (Providence, R.I.), Neil Borgman (Louisville, Ky.), Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.), Patrick Vaughn (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.), Phillip Malloy (Louisville, Ky.) and Murphy each with one.
Centre outshot Oglethorpe 63-23 in the game, held a 17-12 advantage in face offs and turned the ball over 16 times to Oglethorpe's 23.
The Colonels have clinched an appearance in the SCAC Tournament which begins Friday in Birmingham, Ala. Seeding and game times will be determined following a Sunday night game between Birmingham Southern and Sewanee.
