Men's lacrosse falls 18-12 at Sewanee

The Centre men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 18-12 to Sewanee in a Southern Athletic Association game Saturday in Sewanee, Tenn.

Though the Colonels led for much of the first half, Sewanee controlled the rest of the game, outscoring Centre 12-1 in the second half and at one point scoring 11 straight goals. Leading the scoring for Centre was Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) with four goals while Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.) and Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) each had two goals and two assists. Michael Morris led Sewanee with four goals and three assists.

Centre was the first to score in the game, going up 3-0 before Sewanee got on the board and cut the margin to one at 4-3 by the end of the first quarter. Though Sewanee took a brief lead at 6-5, the Colonels went on a run of six straight goals to take an 11-6 lead to halftime. That would be the last of the highlights for Centre, as Sewanee scored the next 11 goals to go up 17-11 before Hardman scored with less than two minutes remaining.

Also scoring for Centre in the game were Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.), Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.), Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) and Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.). Gray finished with a team-high three assists.

Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made 23 saves in goal for Centre while Sewanee goalie Tommy Healy had three saves. Sewanee outshot Centre 70-25, won 22 of 34 face offs and had a 34-17 advantage in ground balls.

Centre falls to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in SAA play. The Colonels take on Denison in Charlottesville, Va. on Sunday.
