Colonels come from behind for 16-14 win over Berry

The Centre men's lacrosse team erased a five goal deficit to defeat Berry in a Southern Athletic Association game Saturday in Danville, Ky.

Leading the way for the Colonels was Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.), who scored a team-high five goals, all in the second half, while also leading the team with two assists. In all, six players scored multiple goals for Centre with Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) adding three and Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.), Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) and Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) each scoring twice. Berry's Cory Hall tied Connors for a game-high with five goals while teammate Maxwell Smerka added four.

The Colonels trailed for most of the first three quarters after Berry opened the game by scoring the first four goals. Berry held a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to as many as five at 7-2 after back to back goals in the second quarter.

Centre began to rally at that point, scoring three of the final four goals of the first half to cut the margin to 8-5 at halftime. The Colonels opened the second half by scoring four of the first five goals to tie the game at nine. After the teams traded goals to finish the third quarter tied at 11, Centre took the lead for good when Stubbs, Hughes and Connors scored the first three goals of the final quarter. With the teams alternating scores the rest of the way, Berry never cut the lead to less than two points.

Berry took 45 shots to Centre's 36 in the game, and Centre's Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made 13 saves with Berry's Jordan Boreman making six stops. Centre held a 19-13 edge in face offs and a 33-27 advantage in ground balls.

Centre improves to 4-2 overall with a 1-1 record in SAA competition while Berry falls to 6-4, also with a 1-1 record in the conference. The Colonels host Millsaps at 5 p.m. Friday.
