@CentreMensLax Suffers First Defeat of Season at Aurora
Face Offs Won
AURORA, Ill. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's lacrosse team traveled to the Chicagoland area to compete in their first road game of the season as they took on the Aurora Spartans. Centre couldn't overcome a hot start by the Spartans and lost by a score of 11-3.
Aurora opened the scoring just seven seconds into the game after winning the opening faceoff as Bailey Smith scored. Two minutes later, Smith assisted on a goal by Jason Koziol to make it 2-0. Smith scored two more goals for Aurora, with one coming on a man advantage for the Spartans, and then Trevor McNamara scored in the closing minutes of the opening period to give Aurora a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans outscored Centre 4-0 in the second quarter as every opportunity the Colonels had to score was stopped by Aurora goalkeeper Tyler Lombardi. The lead would eventually grow to 10-0 before the Colonels got on the board in the fourth quarter as sophomore Leland Gray (Louisville, Ky.) found freshman Dominic Nayan (Memphis, Tenn.) for the newcomer's first collegiate goal.
Junior Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) picked up his seventh goal of the season with three minutes remaining in the contest, and then Nayan scored his second goal of the contest just 45 seconds later to wrap up the scoring.
Aurora held a 30-13 advantage over the Colonels in shots, a 23-22 advantage in ground balls and won 11 of the game's 18 faceoffs.
Junior Sam Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) stopped seven shots in goal for the Colonels.
The Colonels will stay in the state of Illinois for their next game as they will play the home standing Augustana Vikings on Sunday afternoon.
