Colonels stifle Panthers 9-3 in Saturday matinee

HANOVER, Ind. - The Centre men's lacrosse team stifled Hanover, 9-3, in a closely contested matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Centre improves to 3-1 overall on the young season, while Hanover drops its season opener.
The Colonels and Panthers both exchanged a pair of goals in the first quarter. Roughly 90 seconds into the contest Patrick Boylston gave Hanover the early lead off of an assist from Joseph DeLeo.
Nearly five minutes later Centre responded, courtesy of freshman Anthony DiMichele (Cincinnati, Ohio). Fellow freshman Padriac Dermody (Louisville, Ky.) assisted on the play.
Hanover took back the lead just thirty seconds later as Gage Hafl found the back of the net.
Neither team was able to muster any offense until the final minute of the quarter as DiMichele tallied his second goal of the contest, tying the game at two.
The back and forth action would continue into the second quarter.
Freshman Nic Malubay (Louisville, Ky.) gave the Colonels a 3-2 advantage at the 13-minute mark, but DeLeo answered five minutes later, knotting the game at three.
Freshman Jack Shannon (Palisades, N.Y.) got on the board with only four seconds remaining in the quarter, giving Centre a 4-3 advantage heading into the half.
The Colonels did not let up in the third, extending their lead to 7-3. Dermody recorded his first goal of the contest, his second of the season.
Centre would add two more goals to their lead in the fourth as Shannon and Malubay both recorded their second goals of the contest.
Sophomore Lucas Mozingo (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was his dominant self in the faceoff X, winning 12 of 16 draws.
In the victory, the Colonels held a 37 to 21 advantage in shots, including a 17-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Malubay led the team with two goals, three ground balls, and one caused turnover.
Centre will be back in action next Saturday for a 1 p.m. ET start at Goucher.
