Maini earns big win but Colonels fall to 40th-ranked Majors
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's tennis battled with 40th-ranked Millsaps Friday, falling by a 5-4 score inside the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville.
The Colonels drop to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Majors, ranked ninth in the South Atlantic Region, move to 11-5 (2-0 SAA).
Rookie Arpit Maini (Spartanburg, S.C.) earned headlines for the Colonels with an impressive 6-1, 7-6(5) victory against Millsaps senior Diego Marti-Vertiz – the ninth-ranked singles player in the region – at the No. 1 singles draw.
But the Majors took the rest of the singles flights, which were played before doubles, to clinch the overall team victory.
Although the overall outcome was decided, the Colonels played inspired doubles tennis and claimed all three bouts.
At No. 1, Maini and Adam Slone (Lexington, Ky.) dropped Marti-Vertiz and Brandon Beck, 8-3, in their second doubles match together.
Max Middleton (Atlanta) and Ben Hadlock (Okemos, Mich.) claimed No. 3 doubles over Cameron Doles and Avinash Ananth, 8-4, and Matthew Ko (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Josh Joiner (Danville, Ky.) wrapped things up with an 8-5 win against Cooper Clearley and Josh Shearin at No. 2.
The Colonels return to the courts tomorrow (Saturday) against Birmingham Southern at 10 a.m. ET.
