Softball begins SCAC play, drops two to Millsaps
The Centre softball team dropped two games to Millsaps as it opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader Saturday at Millenium Park.
The Colonels put together a seventh inning rally to send the first game to extra innings before falling 8-4 in the eighth. In game two, Millsaps got to Centre for eight runs in the top of the first and went on to win 8-0.
In the first game, Centre fell behind 2-0 on three singles in the top of the first inning, then allowed another run on an error in the third. The Colonels struck back in the bottom half of the inning when Stephanie Preston (Nicholasville, Ky.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Chelsea Collard (Louisville, Ky.).
Millsaps scored again on an error to go up 4-1 in the top of the fifth, but Centre answered in the bottom half when Regina Sena (Moss Beach, Calif.) crushed a home run to deep left field. Trailing 4-2, the Colonels rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the seventh when Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached on an error and Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.) singled, with both coming home on a two-run single by Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.).
Though the Colonels had sent the game to extra innings, they couldn't pull out the victory as Millsaps strung together four hits and took advantage of two errors to put up four runs in the top of the eighth.
Millsaps stayed hot at the plate as the second game began, batting around in the top of the first inning and turning five hits and three Centre errors into eight runs. Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.), who went the distance on the mound in the first game, came back to work 4.2 scoreless innings in game two, but Centre was unable to score before the game ended by mercy rule in five innings.
The losses drop Centre to 7-12 on the year and 0-2 in SCAC play while Millsaps moves to 8-16 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The teams meet for another doubleheader at 11 a.m. Sunday at Millenium Park.
