The Centre softball team picked up two victories over Mount St. Joseph, winning 3-1 and 4-2 in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In the first game, the Colonels got on the board first on an RBI single by Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.) in the top of the second inning. Mount St. Joseph came back to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Centre answered with two more runs in its next at bat, scoring one on an error and another on a base hit by Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.).
Those runs were all the Colonels needed as Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.) was able to keep Mount St. Joseph off the board the rest of the way. The senior pitcher went the distance for Centre, scattering eight hits over the seven innings and striking out five.
In game two, Centre got all four of its runs in the fourth inning and again got a strong pitching performance, this time from Emily Landherr (Louisville, Ky.).
The Colonels fell behind early after surrendering a run in the bottom of the first, but they were able to tie the game when an RBI single by Ashley Merkin (Alpharetta, Ga.) started the fourth inning scoring. Centre went on to add runs on a wild pitch, a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly by Christian in the inning to go up 4-1.
Mount St. Joseph was able to rally for one more run in its final at bat, but Landherr was able to strand two runners and preserve the victory. For the game, Landherr allowed eight hits over the seven innings while striking out four.
With the wins, Centre improves to 14-17 on the year while Mount St.Joseph falls to 4-20. The Colonels close out the regular season with a four-game series this weekend at Sewanee.
