Colonels split Sunday doubleheader at Piedmont tournament

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Centre softball team wrapped up play at their season-opening tournament at Piedmont College with games against Pfeiffer and Greensboro. The Colonels fell to Pfeiffer 10-3 before defeating Greensboro by a score of 4-3 in walk-off fashion.

GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 10, Centre 3

Against Pfeiffer, the Colonels dug themselves an early hole, surrendering ten runs in the first two innings, including a six-run second frame aided by a Centre error.

In the fifth inning, the Colonels made their biggest offensive push. It started with a single by sophomore Charlotte Mabbs (Olivette, Mo.), who promptly stole second. Freshman Melissa Collins was hit by a pitch and sophomore RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) walked, loading the bases with two outs.

Sophomore Mary-Carter Downing (Lexington, Ky.) drew a bases loaded walk to score Mabbs for Centre's first run of the game. With sophomore Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) at the plate, Pfeiffer threw a wild pitch that sent Collins across the plate for another Colonels run.

Harper then singled to score Sharpe, but a pitching change from Pfeiffer stopped the momentum and Centre was never able to make another offensive threat, eventually falling by the 10-3 margin.

GAME TWO: Centre 4, Greensboro 3

It was a quick turnaround for the Colonels, who looked to avenge their first loss of the season after Greensboro beat them 2-0 on Friday. Greensboro struck first, plating a pair of runs in the third inning, one of them after an error.

The Pride tacked on another unearned run in the fifth to go up 3-0, but Centre answered in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Rachel Skinner (Milton, Ga.) led off with a single and a Piedmont error put runners on second and third with two outs. Senior Lauren Richards (Danville, Ky.) singled to bring home pinch runner Erica Arbuckle (Carmel, Ind.) for the first Centre run.

Senior Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) retired the side for the Colonels in the sixth and Centre cut the lead to 3-2 on consecutive doubles by Mabbs and Skinner.

In the seventh inning, Brewer pitched her way out of a jam and gave the offense a chance, and the Colonels took advantage. Freshman Sarah Fly (Franklin, Tenn.) led off with a single and after a fielder's choice and sacrifice bunt, a single from freshman Sydney Milliner (Laconia, Ind.) put runners on the corners with two outs. A clutch single by Abigail Harper tied the score at 3-3 and in the next at-bat, sophomore Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) came through with the winning single to score Milliner and walk off for the Colonels.

Eight different Centre players recorded hits in the game, with Skinner's two clutch hits pacing the team.

Brewer scattered nine hits across seven innings, striking out three batters and only allowing one earned run for her second win of the season.

Now 2-2 on the year, Centre softball will begin its Southern Athletic Association slate on Feb. 24 with a doubleheader at Birmingham Southern.
