Brewer’s gem helps Colonels defeat Gators in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Centre softball won its fourth game in a row and sixth in the last eight games Tuesday morning, opening its stay at the PFX Spring Games with a 2-1 victory against Allegheny.

Senior Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) spun a complete-game gem for the Colonels (10-8), allowing just one run while striking out five.

Allegheny (5-4) scored in the top of the first after a RBI from Jessica Zavolta, but managed only four more hits and eight total baserunners for the rest of the game.

In their final at-bat, the Gators got the tying run to third with one out before Brewer fanned two in a row to close the game.

Centre's bats were slow to warm up, but in the third Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) drove in RileyAnne Sharpe (Huntsville, Ala.) to tie the game at 1-1.

A two-out rally in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the game. The Colonels came up with four straight singles with two outs on the board, as Cassidy Cook's (Louisville, Ky.) brought home Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) to make it 2-1.

Along with scoring the game-winning run, Stephens went 3-for-3 at the plate. Sharpe and Cook each went 2-for-3.

Brewer improved to 8-2 in the circle with her fifth complete game of the season, lowering her ERA to a stellar 2.23.

Centre's second scheduled game Tuesday against Wisconsin-Superior was called off due to severe weather. The Colonels resume action Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. ET against Western New England.
