JACKSON, Miss. – The Centre softball team pulled off its first Southern Athletic Association sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Millsaps Majors by a score of 3-2.
Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) took the hill for the Colonels and traded zeroes on the scoreboard with the Majors' Karley Williams for the first three innings.
In the fourth inning, Centre's freshmen started a rally as Melissa Collins (Louisville, Ky.) doubled and Sarah Fly (Franklin, Tenn.) singled to put runners at the corners. A Millsaps error loaded the bases and a single by Abigail Harper (Louisville, Ky.) produced the game's first run.
After a Millsaps pitching change, Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) made it 2-0 with another base hit. Sam Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) drove in the final run of the inning for the Colonels on an RBI groundout and Centre had a 3-0 lead.
Brewer held the Majors hitless for the next three innings before running into some trouble in the seventh. Millsaps started off the inning with two straight singles, but Brewer snagged a line drive and struck out the next batter.
The Majors rallied one last time with two more hits and a Centre error, plating two runs in the process, but Brewer got the final batter to pop out to Sarah Aubuchon (Lebanon, Tenn.) in foul territory to preserve the sweep.
The Colonels improved to 16-11 on the year and 8-4 in the SAA while Millsaps fell to 14-14 for the season and 2-9 in conference play. Centre outscored Millsaps 10-2 over the three-game sweep.
Next up for Centre softball will be a midweek doubleheader at Franklin on Apr. 3.
