Colonels keep up the pace at House of Champions

INDIANAPOLIS - The second day of the House of Champions meet is in the books from IUPUI and the Centre swim teams continued to put on excellent swims against stiff competition.

The Saturday scored events portion of the meet began with diving and senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) had another impressive performance on the 1m board, scoring 255.45 points to finish in second place.

On the women's side, the 100-yard butterfly produced a pair of standout swims as sophomore Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) posted a time of 57.44, while senior Claire Coleman (Hurricane, W.Va.) finished with a time of 1:01.03. Coleman and freshmen Keeton Crowe (Lexington, Ky.) and Martha Helsley (Prospect, Ky.) all turned in excellent swims for the Colonels in the 100-yard backstroke.

In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) had another solid swim for Centre, clocking a time of 1:56.42. In the 400-yard individual medley, the top time for the Colonels belonged to sophomore Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio), who shaved over three seconds from her seed time, finishing in 4:48.61.

Finally, the Centre women had a pair of good relays on Saturday. In the 200-yard medley relay, Crowe, Holmes, senior Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.) and sophomore Lindsay Everett (Paris, Ky.) combined for a time of 1:51.82, three seconds better than their seed time. The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Grove, Phillips, Holmes and sophomore Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.) swam 15 seconds faster than they were seeded, finishing seventh overall in 7:44.48.

On the men's side, the Colonels also had an excellent Saturday of relays. The team of senior Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.), junior Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.), sophomore Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and freshman Jimmy Kelley (Cincinnati) finished the 200-yard medley relay in 1:34.46, nearly four seconds faster than their seed time. Kelley and Hambleton teamed with senior Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.) and sophomore Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) to post a time of 7:10.55 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Some of the Centre men's relay members had excellent individual swims in their specialty events. Kelley posted a time of 53.59 in the 100-yard backstroke. Martin finished tenth overall in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.10.

Other noteworthy swims for the Colonels came courtesy of freshman Collin Cummins (Danville, Ky.) in the 100-yard breaststroke and freshman Grey Pendery (Fort Thomas, Ky.), who posted a time of 4:26.56 in the 400-yard individual medley.

The House of Champions meet will conclude on Sunday, and with it, the 2017 portion of the Centre 2017-18 swimming and diving schedule.
