Colonels wrap up swimming at House of Champions
INDIANAPOLIS - The third and final day of competition at the House of Champions meet at IUPUI was held on Sunday and the Centre swimming and diving teams continued their string of good performances heading into the 2018 portion of the schedule. The women's team finished in tenth while the men's team finished 14th. The Centre women defeated Birmingham Southern and three different Division I teams.
In diving, senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) made the most of her finals appearance, making the biggest improvement between prelims and finals in the field as she scored 265.35 points to take fourth place on the 3m board.
The Sunday swimming events began with the mile freestyle. On the women's side, sophomore Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) had a great swim, finishing 11th overall with a time of 17:53.98. Sophomore Cat Gleason (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) also performed well in this event, finishing in 18:29.33. The men's team also had an excellent mile freestyle as sophomore Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) finished in 16:38.06, while junior Tyler Stevenson (Franklin, N.C.) clocked in at 17:25.47.
One of the best events for the Colonels on both sides was the 200-yard backstroke. Freshmen Martha Helsley (Prospect, Ky.), Keeton Crowe (Lexington, Ky.) and Christina Pyfrom (Marsh Harbour, Bahamas) as well as senior Mackenzie Weiland (Crestwood, Ky.) all had seasonal best times in the event. For the men, freshmen Jimmy Kelley (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Grey Pendery (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and sophomore Scott Gupton (Louisville, Ky.) all had great swims, with Kelley's time of 1:56.22 just missing out on a berth in the finals.
In the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) turned in the best time for the Colonels, finishing in 53.73. Freshman Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) also had a good swim for Centre in this event, posting a time of 54.04. For the Centre men, junior Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.) posted a time of 48.36.
The best time for the Centre men in the 200-yard breaststroke belonged to freshman Collin Cummins (Danville, Ky.), who finished with a time of 2:11.38.
In the 200-yard butterfly, sophomore Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.) finished 11th overall with a time of 2:08.66. Senior Claire Coleman (Hurricane, W.Va.) swam well in the same event, finishing in 2:18.34. The Centre men also had a strong 200-yard butterfly, with senior Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) leading the way with a time of 1:55.24, good for 13th place overall. Jimmy Kelley and sophomore Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) also swam for the Colonels in the 200 fly, finishing with respective times of 1:57.06 and 2:00.07.
Finally, both teams finished the meet with strong 400-yard freestyle relay performances. The women's team of Grove, Phillips, Holmes and senior Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.) posted a time of 3:36.55, shaving seven seconds off of their seed time. The men's team of Hambleton, Kelley, Collins and Martin improved on their seed time by over eight seconds, good for a combined time of 3:12.32.
Next up for the Centre swim teams will be their annual training trip to Florida, which will take place over the winter break. The next meet for the Colonels will be on Jan. 12 as they return to Boles Natatorium for the first day of the Colonel Classic.
