SAA Swimming & Diving Championships: Day 1 Recap
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2017-18 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Swimming & Diving Championships officially kicked off Wednesday evening with a handful of events inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.
A pair of senior divers stole the opening night headlines, as Brad Nordin (Paintsville, Ky.) and Jack Miller (Richmond, Ky.) finished the 1-meter dive first and second, respectively, bringing in a combined 37 team points. Nordin's conference-winning 426.40 points ensures his berth in the NCAA Regionals. Miller's 351.25 marks a career-best.
The men's 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.), sophomores Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) and Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.), and freshman Jimmy Kelley (Cincinnati) finished second in 6:57.38 for 34 team points.
All told, the Colonel men are first in the standings after the opening three events.
For the women, the 800-yard freestyle relay A team of sophomores Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio), Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.), along with freshman Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) finished third in 7:39.49 – a new program record – for 32 points.
Centre's B team of MacKenzie Weiland (Crestwood, Ky.), Cat Gleason (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), Shelby Montgomery (Georgetown, Ky.) and Martha Helsley (Prospect, Ky.) earned a 10th-place finish to garner 14 points.
The Colonel women sit tied for second in the team standings after Wednesday's event.
