SAA Swimming & Diving Championships: Day 2 Recap

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2017-18 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Swimming & Diving Championships continued Thursday with a full slate of events inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.

In the early session, senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) dominated the field with an impressive title effort in the 1-meter dive. She scored 534.90 points, shattering her own conference record en route to her seventh career SAA diving championship.

In the evening session, the women's A team in the 200-yard freestyle relay brought home 40 points with a first-place finish. Senior Cameron Beach (Greenville, S.C.), sophomores Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) and Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.), and rookie Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) finished in 1:36.68.

Blankenbeker and sophomore Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle, bringing in a combined 29 team points.

Beach and Phillips would also finish in the top six in the 50-yard freestyle sprint.

Holmes tallied 16 points in the 200-yard IM with a third-place finish.

In the last event of the night, Centre's Grove, Beach, Jacquelyn Engel (Lexington, Ky.) and Martha Helsley (Prospect, Ky.) earned fourth in the 400-yard medley relay.

The women currently sit fourth in the team standings.

For the men, senior Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) earned the conference crown in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 21.17 as the top seed.

Junior Mitchell Collins (Richmond, Ky.) recorded 12 points with a seventh-place finish in the same event.

The Colonels earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Martin, Mitchell, sophomore Michael Hambleton (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and freshman Luke Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished in 1:24.95.

Centre's 400-yard medley relay also earned a silver medal, as Martin, Collins, Ensign-George and Jimmy Kelley (Cincinnati) finished in 3:26.14.

In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Arthur Ensign-George (Louisville, Ky.) carried the men's side with a fifth-place finish.

The men are second in the team standings after day two.
