Hayhurst runner-up finish highlights Centre’s NCAA Thursday
INDIANAPOLIS – It was a busy day for members of the Centre swimming and diving team as they participated in their first official day of competition at the NCAA Division III Championships at IUPUI. The biggest highlight of the day was the runner-up finish by senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) in the 1m diving competition.
Hayhurst earned her sixth All-American honor in diving and her second runner-up finish in as many years with an outstanding day of diving on Thursday.
Hayhurst, who was ranked fifth after the preliminary heats in the afternoon session, engaged in a tight three-way battle for first with Nickie Grieseme of Ithaca and Blake Zhou of MIT. In the end, Hayhurst finished with 466.65 points on the 1m board, falling just 1.05 points shy of NCAA Champion Grieseme while also beating Zhou's total by just 0.25 points.
In addition, Centre's NCAA-qualifying relay squad of sophomores Amelia Blankenbeker (Jeffersonville, Ind.), Chloe Grove (Bucyrus, Ohio) and Annie Holmes (Louisville, Ky.) alongside freshman Sarah Phillips (Lexington, Ky.) participated in three separate relays on Thursday.
