HANOVER, Ind. – Centre women's basketball dropped a 62-52 decision Saturday at Hanover, marking the first loss of the 2017-18 campaign.
The Colonels, who are still off to their best start since 2013-14, fall to 3-1 with the loss. The host Panthers improve to 3-1.
Although both sides shot below 33 percent overall, Centre's 1-for-15 effort from long range proved especially costly. Hanover also finished with 38 free throw attempts to the Colonels' 10, recording a plus-14 edge at the charity stripe.
The Panthers came out firing in the first quarter, taking advantage of six Centre turnovers to carry a 20-14 lead into the second.
They kept that momentum going, jumping out to their first double-figure lead at 27-17 just minutes into the second quarter.
Centre would settle in, but still trailed by a 33-25 margin at the half. Sophomore Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) paced the Colonels with eight first-half points.
The visiting Colonels had a solid third stanza, limiting Hanover to just 3 of 19 (15.8%) shooting while making it a two-possession game going into the final quarter.
Hanover did enough to keep Centre at arm's distance in the fourth, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers en route to the 10-point victory.
Wilson was held in check for the second half, scoring only two points while finishing with a team-high 10 points. She also hauled in nine rebounds, adding a pair of assists and blocks.
Senior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) totaled nine points in just 13 minutes, and junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.), added eight off the bench. Reserve guard Ami Ballard (Louisville, Ky.) recorded a game-high four steals.
Hanover's Claire Cromer led all scorers with 20 points, netting seven in the final quarter.
Centre is on the road again Sunday, traveling to face Earlham for a 4 p.m. ET tip.
