Colonels close nonconference slate with victory over Wooster

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Centre women's basketball won its seventh game in a row Saturday afternoon, dropping Wooster 73-51 in the nonconference finale at the Sewanee Holiday Classic.

The Colonels improved to 10-1 overall, reaching the 10-win plateau for the first time since the 2014-15 season while continuing their hot start. Wooster fell to 2-11 overall with its 11th consecutive loss.

Although both sides were sluggish to start offensively, it didn't take the Colonels long to take command of the Fighting Scots.

Centre led 20-10 after the first quarter, getting seven early points from senior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) while holding Wooster to a mere 1-for-11 from the floor.

The Colonels increased their lead before halftime, carrying a 32-17 advantage into the break. Centre clamped down on defense in the first half, holding the Scots to a 3 of 26 (11.5%) shooting mark. Wooster relied on 10 points from the charity stripe to remain within striking distance.

Wooster would more than double its point total in the third quarter, but couldn't slow down a Colonel squad that scored 24 points from seven different contributors.

Centre would take its largest lead of the day in the fourth quarter, as freshman Abigail Wehby's (Brentwood, Tenn.) jumper made it 65-39 with just under seven minutes remaining.

The Colonels coasted home, winning by double figures for the fourth game in a row and seventh time this season.

Centre held Wooster to 28 percent (16-57) from the floor, marking the fifth consecutive game in which the Colonels' opponent shot below 40 percent.

Junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) paced Centre with a season-high 15 points, going 5 of 7 overall and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. She added five rebounds, a steal and a block, as well.

Freshman Madison Marcum (Cincinnati) followed with 11 points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers, as Wehby and Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) tallied 10 points each.

Kellam finished with nine points, but also had two assists and a season-best four steals. Sophomore Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.) had a team-high six rebounds as the Colonels finished with a 42-36 edge on the glass.

Centre jumps back into Southern Athletic Association play next week, hosting Birmingham Southern Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. ET.
