Seniors come through for Centre women in 61-56 victory over Sewanee

DANVILLE, Ky. – Seniors Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) and Olivia Schad (Cincinnati) made clutch plays for the Centre women's basketball team on Senior Day as the Colonels defeated the Sewanee Tigers 61-56, securing the no. 5 seed in next week's Southern Athletic Association Tournament in Atlanta.

In a back and forth fourth quarter, the Tigers went ahead 52-48 on a layup by Bella Bombassi. After a timeout, sophomore Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer and connected on all three free throws to move Centre within a point. Another Wilson jumper just ahead of the shot clock buzzer made it 54-53 with just under two minutes left.

After Schad got a timely steal, Kellam found junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.), who swished a 12-footer to put Centre up for the first time since the 6:05 mark in the quarter. Sewanee looked to leading scorer Bella Taylor for the counter, but Kellam stole the ball and after a scramble, found Schad in the corner for a three-pointer to give the Colonels a four-point lead.

Kellam and Schad made three of their final four free throws for the Colonels the rest of the way to secure the victory and the fourth seed for the Colonels.

Wilson led all scorers with 17 points, with Stewart and Kellam also scoring in double figures. Stewart's seven rebounds also represented a game high. Seniors Kellam and Schad combined to dish out ten assists.

In a game where points were at a premium, the Colonels converted 84.2 percent of their free throws, compared to just 64.7 percent for the Tigers.

The Colonels will face fourth-seeded Berry in the quarterfinal round of next week's SAA Tournament at Oglethorpe.
