Centre leads after opening day at home spring invite
TAMPA, Fla. - It was a brutal day on the course for all of the women's teams at the Centre Spring Invite at Saddlebrook G.C. but at the end of the first day of play, Centre holds an 11-shot lead.
The Colonels posted a combined team score of 336 on Friday, a significantly higher score from their final round at Jekyll Island last week, but good enough to lead Division II Eckerd by 11 shots. Denison is in third place, followed by Wellesley and Allegheny.
Individually, reigning Southern Athletic Association Women's Golfer of the Week Bailey Plourde (Newcastle, Maine) leads the way for both the Colonels and the entire field with a score of 77 through the first 18 holes. Plourde posted the only sub-80 score of the first day of play.
Senior Eliza Hudson (Mauckport, Ind.) finished with a score of 83 on Friday to tie for third place overall, rebounding from a difficult stretch in the middle of the back nine to par her final two holes and land a place in the top five overall.
Senior Alison Miller (Lexington, Ky.) fired a score of 86 to become Centre's third player in the top ten for the tournament through the opening 18 holes. Miller sits in a tie for seventh place overall.
Senior Madison Grant (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Cameron Cahill (Lexington, Ky.) rounded out Centre's Friday totals with respective scores of 90 and 99. Freshman Lauren Zacks (Sarasota, Fla.) entered as an individual and posted a score of 88 to land in ninth place overall.
The Centre Spring Invite will conclude on Saturday with the final 18 holes of play.
