Colonels win Women’s Centre Spring Invite; Plourde earns medalist honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Saturday at the Centre Spring Invite proved to be a much better day for the Centre women's golf team as the Colonels used the final day of play to break away from the pack and win the tournament comfortably. Along the way, freshman Bailey Plourde (Newcastle, Maine) picked up her first career individual tournament victory.

Centre, who shot 336 on a Friday round that had every team in the field struggling, bounced back with a combined team score of 319 on Saturday to win the tournament with a two-day score of 655. Division II Eckerd finished second at 690, followed by Denison and Wellesley.

Individually, Plourde, who won the SAA Women's Golfer of the Week award last week for her play at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate, kept up her strong play with a round of 75 on Saturday, coupled with her 77 on Friday for a two-day score of 152, winning the tournament by seven shots over Laila Forstmane of Eckerd.

Senior Alison Miller (Lexington, Ky.) had one of the best single round turnarounds of the tournament on Saturday, improving on her Friday score by ten shots with a score of 76. Miller started off her back nine with a birdie and minimized mistakes the rest of the way to tie for third overall.

Senior Eliza Hudson (Mauckport, Ind.) made it three Colonels in the top four overall, finishing fourth with a two-day score of 165. Hudson posted a score of 82 on Saturday to go along with her 83 on Friday.

Senior Madison Grant (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Cameron Cahill (Lexington, Ky.) each made great strides from Friday in their Saturday rounds, finishing off Centre's totals for the day with respective scores of 86 and 91. Grant managed a tie for 12th place overall with a two-day score of 176.

The Colonels will be off next week after a busy last seven days of golf. The next tournament for Centre will be the Washington University Invite in St. Louis, beginning on Apr. 7.
