Colonels advance to SAA championship with 13-6 win over Millsaps

The Centre women's lacrosse team advanced to the first Southern Athletic Association championship game after posting a 13-6 win over Millsaps in a semifinal game Saturday in Sewanee, Tenn.

Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) led the way for the Colonels offensively with a game-high four goals while Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored three times.

Centre controlled the game from the beginning as Mastey scored all three of those goals in a stretch where the Colonels took a 5-0 lead. Millsaps didn't get on the board until 15 minutes into the game, and Centre was able to take an 8-2 lead to halftime.

The second half brought more of the same as Centre scored four of the first five goals and built its lead to as many as nine at 12-3 with six minutes to play. With the game already well in hand, Millsaps scored three of the last four goals.

Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) added two goals and an assist while Maddie Baker (Louisville, Ky.), Andrea Merchak (Lexington, Ky.), Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) and Anne Carole Preuss (Louisville, Ky.) also found the net for the Colonels.

Overall, Centre outshot Millsaps 42-15 in the game. Madelyn Walker made 17 saves in goal for Millsaps while Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) had seven saves for Centre. The Colonels also held a 14-7 edge in draw controls and a 31-19 advantage in ground balls.

Centre improves its record to 10-6 on the season while Millsaps falls to 8-6. The Colonels will face Sewanee in Sunday's championship game.
