The Centre women's lacrosse team fell to 2-1 on the season after losing to the 23rd ranked Augustana (Ill.) Vikings by a score of 12-6 on the South Field.
Juniors Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) and Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) each scored a pair of goals for the Colonels, while sophomore Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) each added one goal. Senior Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) led Centre with two assists, while senior Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Ellen Resinger each had one assist. Kelly Stelzer scored four goals to lead the Vikings.
The Colonels controlled the early moments of the game, scoring two goals in the opening 15 minutes, courtesy of Emily Madden and Audrey Powers. Augustana responded quickly, tying the score at two in less than 30 seconds of game action. Centre fired right back, jumping ahead 3-2 on an Ellen Resinger goal at the 18-minute mark. The Vikings took their first lead of the game at 4-3 with three minutes remaining, but Jacqueline Anderson tied the game with 37 seconds left in the half and the teams went to the break tied at 4.
Augustana opened the second half hot, scoring two goals in the opening two minutes. Audrey Powers scored on an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 6-5. The Vikings would score two more goals over the next 14 minutes before Emily Madden scored the Colonels' final goal of the game, cutting the lead to 8-6. Augustana responded with one last offensive flurry, scoring the game's final four goals to provide the 12-6 margin.
The Centre women's lacrosse team will be back in action on Friday, March 7th with a 5:00 P.M. home game against Tennessee Wesleyan.
