PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's lacrosse team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on the second game of the spring break Florida trip as they were defeated by the Clarkson Golden Knights by a score of 17-4.
Clarkson opened up the scoring with a pair of goals by Katie Sergeant before the Colonels got on the board at the five-minute mark with a goal from sophomore Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Clarkson's Kate Dillon scored the next three goals and then Centre responded as senior Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) scored off the feed from freshman Abigail Tessitore (Greer, S.C.) to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Golden Knights controlled the final 17 minutes of the half, outscoring Centre 7-1 with a goal from reigning SAA Offensive Player of the Week Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) representing the only scoring output from the Colonels for the rest of the half.
The second half was short on goals as the final period saw both teams go scoreless for spans of seven and nine minutes each. Bellamah converted her second free position goal of the game with 9:31 left, but it was the only goal the Colonels could muster in the second half as Clarkson outscored Centre 5-1 in the final 30 minutes.
Bellamah led the Colonels with two goals and also picked up three draw controls.
In addition to her goal in the first half, Resinger had a game high six draw controls to help the Colonels to 12-9 advantage over the Knights in that category.
Junior Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) saved 15 shots in goal and was also credited with two ground balls.
The Colonels will return to Danville for their next game against Millsaps on Saturday as they will look to stay undefeated in the Southern Athletic Association.
