@CentreWomensLax Suffers First SAA Loss of Season at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a sluggish opening half against the Sewanee Tigers, falling behind 6-1 and eventually losing by a score of 12-6 for their first loss in Southern Athletic Association play in 2017.

The Colonels were outshot 21-7 in the first half as the more aggressive Tigers got on the board first with a pair of goals from Brooke Winfield. Senior Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) found junior Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) for a goal at the nine-minute mark to cut the deficit in half but it proved to be the only goal of the opening period for the Colonels.

Sewanee outscored Centre 4-0 the rest of the way and Anna Comer's goal with 11 seconds remaining gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead going into halftime.

Junior Hannah Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) opened up the scoring for the Colonels in the second half with a free position shot, but Sewanee fired back with three unanswered goals to go up 9-2.

The Colonels had their best stretch of the game midway through the second half as they scored four consecutive goals, including a free position shot from Bellamah and three scoring efforts off the stick of junior Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) that cut the lead to 9-6, but that was as close as Centre would get. Sewanee keeper Brianna Young recorded four clutch saves and the Tigers tacked on three more goals in the final eight minutes to provide the final margin.

Gibbons tied for a game high with three goals. Resinger led the Colonels with five ground balls and recorded a game high six draw controls. Junior Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 16 saves and was also credited with four ground balls on the day.

The Centre women's lacrosse team will return to the road on Saturday as they travel to Memphis to take on reigning SAA Tournament champion Rhodes.
