Gibbons' five goal performance lifts Colonels past Tigers

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's lacrosse team continued their winning ways on Sunday afternoon, defeating the DePauw Tigers, 15-4, at South Turf Field.
In the young season, the Colonels improve to 2-1 while the Tigers fall to 0-2.
The Colonels got on the Tigers early, taking a commanding 4-0 lead before the fourteen-minute mark of the first half.
DePauw's Sophie Hensley struck twice in the next five minutes of play, getting assists from Summer Asad and Mali Pustow.
With a 4-2 lead, seniors Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) and Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) went to work, accounting for five of the next six Centre goals. Jackson also netted her second goal of the contest before the half.
The Colonels continued to dominate in the second half, scoring four straight goals again and extending their lead to 14-2. Gibbons and Bellamah both added a pair of goals to their resume.
The Tigers continued to fight late in the second half, cutting the Colonels lead to 14-3 with only nine minutes remaining. Centre responded three minutes later, courtesy of sophomore Abby Whitford (Dayton, Ohio).
Centre would cruise the remainder of the game, finishing the contest with 15 goals.
In the dominant performance, six different Colonels found the back of the net. Gibbons led all scorers with five goals and four assists. Bellamah was a close second, recording four goals.
Centre held a favorable 29-13 advantage in ground balls as Bellamah paced the team with nine. Freshman Mary Katherine Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) finished with five.
Continuing her excellent all-around game as a midfielder, Bellamah forced a program record nine turnovers in the win.
The Colonels also recovered 17 of 21 draw controls and had 14 successful clears on 15 attempts.
Centre will hit the road next Saturday for a Southern Athletic Association tilt with Birmingham Southern at 1 p.m. ET.
