Colonels roll past Vikings, win ninth in a row

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's lacrosse won its ninth game in a row by double digits Sunday, handing visiting Berry a 20-7 defeat in Southern Athletic Association play at South Turf Field.

The Colonels improved to 9-1 overall and a pristine 3-0 in-conference, having won every game since a narrow season-opening defeat more than a month ago. The Vikings slide to 4-6 (1-3 SAA) with the loss.

Centre jumped out to a quick lead mere seconds into the match, as Mary Katherine Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) scored off an assist from her older sister, Hannah.

Back-to-back scores from Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) gave Centre a 3-0 lead near the 26-minute mark.

Berry hung around early, thanks in part to some tough saves from keeper Ella Makin and a trio of goals that cut the Colonel lead to 6-3.

But Centre soon overwhelmed the Vikings, netting seven straight goals before the half ended to signal the running clock.

Bellamah had four goals and a pair of assists at the break, with the Colonels commanding a 13-3 advantage. Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.) also had a first-half hat trick, and Hannah Hardy had two goals and as many assists.

Jackson scored another three goals in the second half – tying her career high with six goals for the second game in a row – as the Colonels cruised home and reached the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season.

Bellamah finished with six goals, as well, leading all players with nine points. She also grabbed eight of Centre's 19 draw controls.

The Colonels out-shot the Vikings 49 to 10, and also caused 12 of Berry's 24 turnovers. Katy Haering (Louisville, Ky.) led the way individually with three caused turnovers.

Centre has a midweek meeting with Wittenberg (2-6) Tuesday, hosting the Tigers at 6 p.m. ET at South Turf Field.
