DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's lacrosse marched past Hendrix Sunday in a soggy regular season finale at South Turf Field, 16-3.
Originally scheduled as the 2018 season opener Feb. 17 in Conway, Ark., the make-up game also became Centre's Senior Day. Prior to the opening draw, the Colonels celebrated the careers of seniors Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.), Lena Jewler (Saratoga, Calif.), Devin Baker (Jacksonville, Fla.), Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) and Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.)
Centre caps the regular season 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the Southern Athletic Association, earning the two-seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The visiting Warriors slip to 6-7 (3-3 SAA).
Although the match was briefly tied at 1-1, the Colonels wasted little time creating separation after scoring seven goals in the first 10 minutes of action.
Centre carried a 10-goal lead into the half, scoring 11 times on 22 shots. Bellamah's four first-half goals paced the Colonels.
As had become a familiar trend during Centre's recent 13-game winning streak, the second half was little more than a formality as the Colonels coasted home.
Bellamah finished the game with five goals and a pair of assists, while Gibbons followed with three scores and one helper.
Jackson netted a pair of goals and as many assists, as did Mary Katherine Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) and Abigail Tessitore (Greer, S.C.). Hannah Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) and Abby Whitford (Dayton, Ohio) each had one score.
Marek, Baker, Gibbons and Mary Katherine Hardy each had four ground balls, as Centre nearly doubled Hendrix in team ground balls, 32-17.
Clare Heaney (Fairfax Station, Va.) was a force defensively, causing six turnovers to go with three ground balls.
Centre will host a SAA Tournament semifinal next Sunday, facing the winner of three-seed Sewanee and six-seed Berry. Game time has not been determined.
