Centre women split Saturday doubleheader at home

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's tennis split a pair of matches Saturday in chilly conditions in their spring home opener, defeating Johnson University (Tenn.) before falling to Campbellsville.

MATCH ONE: Centre 9, Johnson 0

The Royals (3-4) provided little resistance to the Colonels (2-5) in Saturday's first match, winning just a handful of games in Centre's 9-0 sweep.

In doubles, Centre's No. 1 duo of Aliza Williams (Cincinnati) and Abigail Kent (College Station, Texas) marched to an 8-0 victory over Madi Buchanan and Hannah Hamm.

No. 2 doubles went similarly, with Caroline Stallings (Clarksville, Md.) and Emily Zelichenok (Louisville, Ky.) dropping Danielle Keehner and Annalise McDonald, 8-0.

Kenny Snow (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Zena Maddux (Hopkinsville, Ky.) paired up to hand Maddie Holt and Emily Allen an 8-1 defeat in No. 3 doubles.

Leading 3-0, Centre wouldn't lose any ground in singles action as all six individuals won in straight sets.

Kent defeated Buchanan 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Williams went 6-1, 6-2 over Hamm at No. 2.

Stallings didn't drop a game against Keehner at No. 3 singles, neither did Zelichenok (No. 4), Maddux (No. 5) or Snow (No. 6) in their respective singles victories.

MATCH TWO: Campbellsville 5, Centre 4

Ranked No. 16 in the NAIA Top 25, Campbellsville (4-0) provided a much tougher opponent in Centre's second match of the afternoon.

The Tigers took two of three doubles matches to gain an early edge. Centre's Maddux and Snow duo earned the team's lone point at No. 3, defeating Harris and Decker, 8-2.

That slight edge proved to be the difference, as the six singles bouts were split between the two sides.

The Colonels' depth proved valuable, as Zelichenok, Maddux and Snow each earned victories at Nos. 4, 5 and 6, respectively.

Zelichenok defeated Harris, 7-5, 6-2, and Maddux dropped Decker, 6-2, 6-0. Snow's win came by default.

Centre returns to its home court tomorrow (Sunday) with a noon meeting against Midway.
