The Centre College volleyball team opened the Eureka College Tournament, in Eureka, Ill. on Saturday, September 4, with matches against Rose-Hulman and Stephens College Saturday, Sept. 4, in Eureka, Ill..
Centre took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20, but Rose-Hulman rallied and won the final three sets 26-24, 25-17, and 15-13.
Senior Rebecca Pugh (Colfax, Calif.) led the Colonels in kills with 21, while freshman Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 11. Junior Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) had an outstanding game as she recorded 47 assists. Junior Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) provided Centre with 24 digs. Leading the Colonels in blocks was junior Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) and senior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) with four apiece.
The Colonels then returned to action later in the day against Stephens College. Stephens took the first set 25-21, but the Colonels would tie the match up as they won the second set 25-18. The match continued to go back and forth as Eureka took the third set 25-23. Centre responded by taking the fourth set 25-21, but Stephens then took the fifth and final set 15-6.
Woeste and Janszen each had 15 kills in the match for the Colonels, while Greer led the team for the second straight time in assists with 51. Hench capitalized for Centre while serving as she recorded four aces. Janszen also led the team in digs with 19.
Centre will return to action Sunday, Sept. 5 for day two of the tournament. The Colonels are set to play Illinois College at 12 p.m. CST and then Blackburn College at 2 p.m. CST in Eureka, Ill.
