Volleyball wins final two matches of Hanover College Invitational

On Saturday, September 11, the second and final day of the Hanover College Invitational in Hanover, Ind., the Centre volleyball team was able to beat Anderson College in three sets and Spalding in four sets.

Although the first set was tight against Anderson in the first match of the day for Centre, the Colonels were able to pull away as they won 25-22. Centre carried the momentum into the second match as they went on to win 25-16. In the third set Anderson played well, but the Colonels again made the most of it late in the set as they took the game and the match 25-22.

Senior Rebecca Pugh (Colfax, Calif.) led Centre in kills with 13, while freshman Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) provided 11 kills in the game. Janszen also recorded two aces in the games. Leading the team in assists was junior Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) with 40. Sophomore Jenna Foushee (Louisville, Ky.) recorded 11 digs in the match, while junior Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) had four digs. Senior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) provided the Colonels with four blocks in the win and freshman Chevelle Richards (Scottsville, Ky.) had three blocks.

Centre then went on to play Spalding after their match with Anderson and the Colonels opened the match by winning their fourth straight set 25-17. Spalding tied the game at a set a piece after they won the second set 25-23. The third set would be another close one, with the Colonels able to prevail over their opponent 25-21. In the fourth set Centre would come away with their second straight win as they knocked off Spalding 25-21.

Janszen had 13 kills and junior Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) had nine in the win. Greer recorded 36 assists, while Janszen had three aces and Foushee provided the Colonels with two. Janszen also led the Colonels in digs with 15. Pugh came away with 13 digs in the match and Hench recorded 13. In the match Hupman and Woeste each had four blocks and Richards had three blocks.

Members of the Hanover College Invitational were Hanover's Rachel Kloentrup and Kirsten Brandvik, Thomas More's Katie Sullivan and Brandi Corbello, Centre's Woeste, and Austin's Taylor Stone.

The Colonels next play in their annual Centre College Classic on Friday, September 17th and Saturday, September 18th in Danville, Ky. Centre will open play in the tournament at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against Mt. Union.
