DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak, improving to 4-3 in Southern Athletic Association contests with a dramatic victory over the Rhodes Lynx in five sets.
The Colonels used an 11-1 run early in the opening set to take command of the opening stages of the contest. Rhodes pulled to within two points at 22-20, but Centre came through in the clutch with a block by junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and won the set after a Rhodes service error.
In the second set, Centre used an 8-1 run to turn a four-point deficit into a lead and never looked back. This time the Lynx could get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Colonels once again won on a serving error.
Centre jumped out to a lead in the third set and looked to put the match away, but Rhodes responded with eight straight points and held onto the momentum for the rest of the set, adding a run of five straight points to extend the match with a 25-18 win.
The fourth set played out in a similar fashion to the third set as Centre led 12-4 in the early stages, but Rhodes chipped away, using a run of seven straight points late in the set to take the lead and eventually win by a score of 25-21.
The match moved to the deciding fifth set and the lead changed hands five times. With the score tied at 8-8, Centre scored five of the next six points and freshman Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) put away the 15-11 Centre victory with the final kill of the match.
Freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) led the way for Centre with ten kills, while Hailey Foote added nine kills and three aces. Seniors Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) each posted 13 assists to pace the Colonels on the day. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) posted a game high 17 digs for Centre with Peyton Vacala adding 11 digs.
The Colonels will be back in action at home on Wednesday as they will take on the Thoroughbreds of Kentucky State University at 7:00 PM.
