Centre Volleyball Rebounds with 3-1 Win over Transylvania
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – After a tough weekend road trip that saw the Centre volleyball team lose two of three matches, the Colonels returned to Alumni Gym for their final home game of the season as they took on the Transylvania Pioneers. The Colonels defeated the Pioneers in four sets to mark the first Centre win over Transylvania since the 2010 season.
The first set was the most tightly contested of the four. Transylvania used a run of seven straight points to take an early lead but the Colonels slowly chipped away, eventually taking the lead at 23-22. The Colonels forced the Pioneers into a set point and won the opening set 25-23 after a Transy service error.
In the second set, the two teams traded the lead back and forth until Transylvania scored five points in a row late in the contest. The Pioneers kept the momentum from the rally and won by a score of 25-21 to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set saw Centre hold a slight lead early on and after Transy took the lead at 15-14, the Colonels responded and never looked back. Senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) combined with freshman Margaret Cowens (Memphis, Tenn.) for a block that forced the Pioneers into a set point, and then Hagan put home the final kill herself in the 25-18 Colonels victory.
Trailing 16-14 in the fourth set and looking to avoid a fifth and deciding set, coach James Neyhouse called a timeout that stopped the Pioneers' momentum and kick-started a Centre rally. With the score tied at 18-18, Centre scored the next six points to force the match to its brink and junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) connected on the final kill on an assist from senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) that gave Centre a 25-20 fourth set victory and the match.
Hailey Foote led all players with 12 kills in the contest. Shelby Foote finished with 23 of the Colonels' 30 assists in her final home game in the gold and white. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) excelled defensively with 23 digs, with freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and the Foote cousins finishing with double digit digs. Babey also recorded four service aces, equaling the total number of aces by the Transylvania team on the night.
The Colonels will wrap up the regular season over the weekend as they travel to Hendrix and Rhodes for their final conference matches of the year.
