Centre Volleyball Falls to Hendrix in SAA Semifinals

CONWAY, Ark. (CentreColonels.com) – Coming off the momentum of a hard-fought victory over Rhodes in the Southern Athletic Association quarterfinals, the Centre volleyball team faced a tough task in the semifinals as they faced top seed and host school Hendrix. The Colonels dropped their semifinal match to the Warriors in straight sets.

A 10-1 run by the Warriors broke open a tight opening set as Hendrix pulled away to a 25-13 victory and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Trailing 20-12 in the second set, the Colonels went on a huge run, scoring six consecutive points, three coming from freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.), to cut the lead to two points. Hendrix called time out and regrouped, scoring five of the next six points to finish off the second set by a score of 25-19.

The third set unfolded in a similar fashion to the second as Centre had to battle back from a sizable deficit. Trailing 19-10, the Colonels scored 13 of the next 15 points in the match. Freshman Margaret Cowens (Memphis, Tenn.) and senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) provided clutch kills to tie the score, and a tandem block by junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and sophomore Lizzie Royster (Lincoln, Neb.) gave Centre a 23-21 lead. With momentum on Centre's side, Hendrix regained the advantage with a Leila Matsumoto ace and the Warriors put away the final kill of the 25-23 win on the next point.

Shelby Foote led the Colonels with eight kills, while her cousin and fellow All-SAA second teamer Hailey Foote added six kills. Shelby Foote also had a team high 17 assists in her final collegiate game. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) posted a game high 21 digs for the Colonels, followed by senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) with 16, Peyton Vacala with 13 and Hailey Foote with ten.

With 13 kills and 28 digs in two tournament games and a clutch block in Centre's victory over Rhodes in the quarterfinal round, Katherine Hagan was named to the SAA All-Tournament Team.
