Centre volleyball drops SAA finale at Oglethorpe
ATLANTA – In their final Southern Athletic Association contest of the season, the Centre volleyball team traveled to Oglethorpe to take on the Stormy Petrels. The Petrels defeated the Colonels in four sets to bring Centre's conference record to 5-9 for the year.
The opening set saw Oglethorpe grab the early lead and keep it, fending off a late Centre rally to take a 25-16 win as Centre committed nine attack errors in the set, compared to just one for the Petrels.
The second set played out as almost a total reversal of the first set as it was Centre who grabbed the early lead and steadily built it, as the Colonels scored seven out of the final nine points of the set to take it by a score of 25-16 and even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the Colonels again fell behind early and could not get over the hump as Oglethorpe maintained its lead and pushed the Colonels to the brink with a 25-18 win.
The fourth set was more of the same as Oglethorpe built an early five-point lead and kept the Colonels at bay for the remainder of the frame, never letting Centre get closer than two the rest of the way and winning by a score of 25-22.
Freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) paced the Colonels with a season high 15 kills, with sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) adding ten. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) finished with a game high 44 assists, two off of her season high. Senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.), often the target of Oglethorpe serves, led five Centre players in double digit digs with 21.
The Colonels will wrap up their regular season on Saturday as they compete in a tri-match at Spalding against the host Golden Eagles as well as Principia. Centre defeated Spalding in straight sets on opening weekend in Danville.
